The Roots of Chai: Spice Up Your Coffee Order
All regular coffee shop goers have come across coffee drinks mixed with “chai”. The fragrant and flavorful mixtures of spices incorporated in chai adds a satisfying richness to coffee with an added calming effect, making chai one of the most popular drinks in the U.S. today. Though taking over local coffee shops across the word, masala chai originates in India, and is a drink commonplace to Indian culture simply meaning, “spiced tea.” It is a mixture of rich black tea and heavy milk flavored with a combination of spices including cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and peppers. Authentic Indian chai has a warming and soothing effect that helps relieve tension while also giving you that caffeinated kick. When mixed in to your favorite coffee, it will be hard to resist a second cup! Make a cup of chai spiced coffee at home, or be sure to try these chai drinks on your next visit to the coffee shop for an Indian twist to your regular coffee order!
Homemade Chai Spiced Coffee
To enjoy the authentic flavor of Indian chai to your home-made coffee, make a standard cup of coffee as normal but add a mixture of 1 teaspoon of chai spices to the ground coffee for each cup you make. You can purchase a mixture of chai spices at a grocery store, or create your own mixture with spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger. Then, just sip and enjoy!
For a bolder take on traditional chai, spike it up even more with a shot of espresso for a dirty chai, or two shots for a double dirty chai. You can get this popular drink at typically any coffee chop, but if it’s not offered, just ask for a chai latte with an added shot of espresso.
Rose Iced Chai
For a sweet and creamy take to a chai latte, rose iced chai pairs strong spices with the floral and pure taste of rose extract, creating a refreshing flavor to your summer coffee choice. We are loving the rose iced chai at Hidden Grounds, located in New Brunswick, New Jersey, made with original chai spice mixtures imported from India and topped with pistachios and rose petals.
