Chanel Breaks Fashion Barriers with Pharrell Williams

Olivia Runnfeldt

Chanel’s latest campaign, launched April 3rd, has us all feeling like a room without a roof! The ad features Pharell Williams in concert, holding a crocodile skin version of the Chanel Gabrielle bag. Chanel made fashion history with this statement, because the brand has never used a male model in their handbag advertisements before. The Gabrielle bag is Chanel’s first major debut since 2011, and comes in three different styles, including a large shopper, backpack and hobo bag.  Each comes with an adjustable strap and can be worn in different ways.

Williams was chosen for the campaign because he is revered as a fashion icon who regularly sports Chanel. According to Williams, he realized that as a man, he can wear some of the clothing and accessories that women wear too. Williams admits that at first he didn’t have anything to carry in his Gabrielle bag – he just liked carrying it!

Chanel is always one of the leading innovators in fashion, and they did not disappoint with this new advertising trend. Will this mean that we will see more men in high-end accessory advertisements? The campaign also featured stars such as Cara Delevigne and Kristen Stewart.  Watch Kristen Stewart in her commercial campaign for the Gabrielle bag here!
